Week 1 Status Report

Week 1 Status Report

Q One of the many activities a Project Manager must do on an on-going basis is to keep people informed about the progress of their project. This is done in a number of ways, but the primary mechanism is a project "status report." These are generated on a regular basis (often weekly), and provided to the key "stakeholders" of the project. For this course, you will be required to submit a status report each week. Your status report is due each week no later than 11:59pm on Friday night. The purpose of this exercise is two-fold: 1. It introduces a key concept in project management; and 2. It will provide me (your key stakeholder!) with insight as to how you are doing, where you are struggling, and what adjustments maybe be needed. The Student Status report has six sections. Fill them out as follows: 1. Your name, the week number (week 1 through week 7) and the date on which the report is being submitted. 2. Progress report - in the table, list the assignments for the week in the first column. Put an "X" in the appropriate column for each assignment to indicate if you are done with it, working on it, or haven't started it yet. Please INCLUDE the reading assignment for the week (chapters in the book). Add additional lines if needed. Note: If you have not finished work from the previous week, include it in this week's report, at the top of the table. 3. Progress status - Indicate your progress for the week as one of the following: Green = I expect to have all assignments done on time; Amber (yellow) = I may be up to one day late on one assignment; Red = I will not be able to complete multiple assignments by the due date, or one assignment will be more than one day late. Provide an explanation for status of Amber or Red. 4. Schedule status - Indicate the amount of time this course is requiring this week: Green = I am able to complete the assignments with a reasonable expenditure of effort; Amber = I am able to complete the assignments but the time required is burdensome; Red = time requirements for this course are monstrous. Provide an explanation for status of Amber or Red. 5. Comprehension status - Indicate how well you understand this week's material (so far): Green = everything generally makes sense, or I am confident it will as we progress further; Amber = some of the material is really confusing and difficult to see the point of; Red = I'm lost. Provide an explanation for status of Amber or Red. 6. Overall Status - Indicate how comfortable you are with your progress in the course to date. The sections above should focus on the current week, but this section should indicate how you feel about the course as a whole. Green = I expect to get through the course with a decent grade; Amber = I'm struggling in this class and worried about my grade, and/or need some assistance with some aspects; Red = I am in a panic and seriously need help. Provide an explanation for all status. The Status Report may take some time at first, but over time it should become pretty simple. We will likely modify the structure, and include additional sections, as we go forward, so be sure to check the material each week for any changes.
